“How to talk about someone when they no longer exist. That’s where my images really started to feel the absence”.
Ensemble Seul gathers the photographs made by Éric Antoine for five years behind closed doors. The artisan of light, he creates his own chemical emulsions to reveal what is no longer and to make his memories of photographic apparitions. He uses the wet collodion process to create his images, made on glass plates. “I try to make photographs that are enigmatic, that belong to no time, to no place” He chose this ancient process for its materiality and finesse, and the time-consuming aspect of this approach, which, as he points out, saved his life somewhat.
Eric Antoine’s photographs plunge us into a poetic universe in black and white, where objects mingle with faces, faces with plants, plants with touch. All our senses are awake, we become this wild animal, in the forest, always watching…
Ensemble Seul restores the powers and brightness of the silver tinted with ambrotypes, and admirably respects the spirit of the collection of Eric Antoine’s works, as an extension of his work.
