About The Book

A human story, a tale of shadows and light that takes shape within a territory where everything intertwines with the harshness and communion of bodies and souls. This territory is the Saint-François district, an island within the city of Le Havre.

South of the Bassin du Commerce, nestled between the rebuilt city center and the port, it's only accessible via the bridges connecting it to other districts. As Le Havre's oldest district along with Notre-Dame, it resisted the architectural redesign undertaken by Auguste Perret after the war. Its reconstruction, blending Breton inspiration (slate roofs) with respect for Bellarmato's historical layout, notably produced a building that now forms its main appeal: the Fish Market (Halle aux poissons). Around the Halle, the district comes alive with a vibrant popular culture, pulsating to the rhythm of its cafes, restaurants, and the festivals held there from May to September.
